Dear City Council Member, I am emailing you to ask you to vote to renew the city’s electricity supply contract with IMEA. Naperville has partnered with IMEA since 1984 and has received low-cost, reliable, non-profit power for well over a decade. IMEA prices have been flat since 2014 while ComEd customers in surrounding communities who buy from "the market" now pay between 20 to 30% more for their power than Naperville. This is only expected to get worse. It is conservatively estimated that if Naperville leaves IMEA, our citizens will see power prices rise by over $40 million per year in 2035. This will be devastating for financially struggling families and there is no reason for this to happen. Additionally, every month since 2011 we have been dutifully paying off construction bonds in our monthly bills. Those bonds will be fully paid in 2035. When that happens rates will decline by $27 million per year and we will receive even lower cost power thereafter. In this regard, leaving IMEA is like abandoning your home after paying off the mortgage. Both the City’s Public Utility Advisory Board and the city’s own consultant (CES) recommended renewing with IMEA. Twenty-nine IMEA member communities have already renewed. There is collective wisdom in these choices. IMEA has a goal to be 100% carbon free by 2050 and by exercising the 10% Member Directed Resources (MDR) option, Naperville will achieve 50% carbon-free electricity as early as 2027. This is not possible if we leave IMEA. For these reasons, I respectfully request that you vote to renew the IMEA contract with the 10% MDR option.
Sincerely
